Professor Karel LEWIT, M.D., DSc

An international authority in manual medicine 

for more than 5 decades and the founder of the internationally 

renowned “Prague School of Manual Medicine & Rehabilitation”.

1946 Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague. Then worked at the Neurological clinic of the 1st Medical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague where he soon became interested in problems of the spinal column, in radiology and since 1951 in manipulation.


He remains involved in teaching manipulation to this day, but his interests broadened and are now focussed on the functional aspects of the motor system and its rehabilitation.


He  has taught his diagnostical approaches and techniques of treatment of the locomotor system in many countries (Germany, Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, the former Soviet Union, England and the US, Australia and NZ). His doctorate thesis was a Czech textbook of Manual Medicine first published in 1967, and translated into German (7 editions), Dutch, Polish, Italian, Spanish,Russian, Swedish and Japanese: rewritten and altered for an English edition (3rd. 1999). In addition about 200 publications in medical journals and books and videotapes (available both in Czech and English).


Professor Karel Lewit received an honorary degree (Honoris Causa) from the Medical University in Lodz, Poland in 2006.
